The little camera was the Lomo LC-A – Lomo Kompact Automat, built in Soviet-era Leningrad by Leningrad Optics and Mechanics Association (Lomo) – and very soon a craze was born. It was an analogue Instagram in the days before digital photography. This Lomo craze may have ended up helping save film photography from an untimely end.

In 1992, the students set up Lomographic Society International, exhibiting shots taken on unwanted Lomos they had bought up from all over Eastern Europe. Then, in the mid-90s, having exhausted the supply of left-over Lomos gathering dust in Budapest, Bucharest or East Berlin, they went to the camera’s manufacturers – still making optics in St Petersburg – and persuaded them to restart production. The negotiations were helped along by the support of the city’s then deputy mayor, Vladimir Putin. On Thursday 22 November, Lomography is celebrating its 20th anniversary, by starting a series of parties in some of its 36 stores around the world

Lomo cameras have continued to increase in popularity in recent years. It was not long ago that you could pick up a good condition Lomo LCA camera up from an auction site or thrift store for just a few dollars. Nowadays their popularity has meant that you will now have to pay several hundred dollars to get the same camera, even second hand.

The body has the same retro look as the lomo and is also cased in a metal shell giving it a good sturdy feel to it. The best bit about this is that despite the camera going out of production many years ago the build quality means there are still plenty of cheap versions for sale. You can usually pick one up of internet auction sites for a few dollars.

Lomo Photography Effect

I've always liked the look of Lomo photos (typically bright colored and highly saturated with darkened edges), but I didn't want to worry about getting another camera or messing with film & scanning. Yesterday I asked people if there was a Photoshop filter that could turn a regular photo into a Lomo-style photo. Several people responded with the Melancholytron filter and a tutorial on achieving the Lomo effect without using filters.

When a group of students in Vienna, Austria, stumbled upon the Lomo Kompakt Automat – a small, enigmatic Russian camera. Mindlessly taking the shot from the hip, and sometimes looking through the viewfinder, they were astounded with the mindblowing photos that it produced – the colours were vibrant, with deep saturation and vignettes that framed the shot – it was nothing like they had seen before! Upon returning home, friends wanted their own Lomo LC-A, igniting a new style of artistic experimental photography that we now know as Lomography.

Following the mania that ensued upon the introduction of Lomography, they flew to St. Petersburg to work out a contract for the worldwide distribution of this fantastic little camera. Soon, the 10 Golden Rules was set up as a guide to this analogue movement, followed by exhibitions, world congresses, parties, installations, collaborations, and events. New products, films, and accessories were developed, and Lomography.com served as the communication hub for Lomographers worldwide. At the same time, Lomography Gallery Stores were put up worldwide.
